Activity Outline

The course covers work integrated learning in specialist practice to consolidate knowledge in ocular disease diagnosis and management important for optometric therapeutic practice. Specifically, this course aims to expose students to a spectrum of ocular pathologies and their management under the direction of ophthalmic specialists. In this environment, students will also develop an appreciation for referral pathways and shared care planning for patients where appropriate. Students will also consolidate basic and advanced eye examination techniques important for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of ocular pathology. 

Learning Objectives

• Identify key ocular features that support differential diagnosis of various ocular conditions
• Develop management plans for ocular pathologies relevant to optometric practice
• Understand the role of ocular therapeutics in the management of patients with ocular disease
• Identify circumstances where referral for specialist medical treatment is required, the urgency of the referral and the most appropriate health care provider to be referred to
• Outline the role of intravitreal injections for the management of retinal disease
