Activity Outline

Join us at Westside Private Hospital for a practical, in-person ophthalmology education program comprising four 30-minute sessions presented by experienced ophthalmologists, Dr Phillipa Sharwood and Dr Christopher Stewart.

This clinically focused program covers common and challenging ophthalmic presentations encountered in everyday practice. Session topics include Adult Onset Esotropia, Watery Eyes, Diagnosing Corneal and Conjunctival Lesions, and Recalcitrant Chalazions and Blepharitis Management. Through evidence-based presentations, practical management strategies and case-based discussion, participants will gain valuable insights that can be readily applied in clinical practice.

Dr Sharwood is an adult and paediatric ophthalmologist with subspecialty expertise in cataract surgery and strabismus. She completed fellowship training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus in London and is a Visiting Medical Officer at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Queensland Children's Hospital. She is also a RANZCO College Examiner, Senior Clinical Lecturer at The University of Queensland, and a founding partner of Queensland Ophthalmic Specialists.

Dr Stewart is an ophthalmologist specialising in oculoplastic, lacrimal and adnexal surgery. He completed advanced fellowship training at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, before returning to Brisbane. He is a Senior Visiting Specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, operates at Westside Private Hospital and St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital, and is actively involved in registrar teaching, research and examining through RANZCO and The University of Queensland. He is also a founding partner of Queensland Ophthalmic Specialists.

Designed to be engaging, practical and interactive, this program provides an excellent opportunity to update clinical knowledge, discuss challenging cases with experts, and strengthen confidence in the diagnosis and management of common ophthalmic conditions.

Learning Objectives

• Differentiate the common causes of adult-onset esotropia based on history, clinical examination, and ocular motility findings and identify features that need urgent referral or imaging
• Understand the indications and risks of escalating pharmacological therapy for chalazia and blepharitis, indications for surgical management and recognise red flag features that warrant further investigation for malignancy or other serious pathology
• Increase confidence in evaluating patients presenting with epiphora, differentiate common causes based on anatomy and clinical findings, and identify appropriate management options
• At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to evaluate patients presenting with epiphora, differentiate common causes based on anatomy and clinical findings, and identify appropriate management options
• Identify and understand the differential diagnosis and potential red flags of lesions that arise on the cornea and conjunctival in adults and children. Understand the treatment options available for patients and indications for urgent referral and treatment.
