Learning Objectives

  • Optometrists will be able to classify penetrating eye trauma
  • Describe the current triage protocol for penetrating eye injuries
  • Optometrists will understand the surgical process and the primary objectives in surgical intervention for ocular trauma
  • Optometrists to understand how they can be more involved in co-management and to discuss techniques for co-management of ocular trauma with ophthalmology colleagues
  • Recognise red flags following ocular trauma
  • Differentiate and characterise possible sequalae of ocular trauma
  • How often will the patient be reviewed after surgeries have ceased
  • Discriminate between benign and suspicious periocular lesions
  • Identify the main characteristics of lesions requiring onward referral for Ophthalmology assessment
  • To understand the non- surgical and surgical management options for periocular tumours
  • Optometrists will be able to compare the different approaches to assessing ocular tissue sections
  • Implement techniques for co-management of periocular tumours with ophthalmology colleagues
  • Understand what is important information for prevention, management, and follow up of periocular tumours to patients.
  • Understand how optometrists can be more involved/ helpful in referral pathway and co-management
  • Discuss the post- operative follow- up timeline and understand what issues to look out for
  • To have an understanding of the timeline of recovery- pain & vision expectations, red flags in post- operative care and general health aspects of care .
  • To have an understanding of 3 different surgical approaches for carcinomas and the pro's and con's of each
