Activity Outline

Professor Pavesio will be talking about the process of dark adaptation and how the rod photoreceptors become depolarised and consume significantly more oxygen to support their increased metabolic activity. This increase in oxygen demand exacerbates retinal hypoxia which is a key factor in the development of Diabetic Retinopathy.

Professor Pavesio will share his experience of bio photonic treatment and the outcomes, and share data and knowledge of how this non-invasive, early-stage treatment opportunity is being used in the United Kingdom.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding Dark Adaptation and Retinal Health: Develop an in-depth understanding of the process of dark adaptation, particularly how rod photoreceptors depolarise and their increased oxygen consumption, leading to retinal hypoxia and its implications for conditions like Diabetic Retinopathy.
  • Exploring Bio Photonic Treatment Methods: Gain insights into bio photonic treatment as a non-invasive option for managing retinal conditions. This includes evaluating its effectiveness and outcomes based on the latest data and experiences shared by experts in the field.
  • Implementing Innovative Treatments in Clinical Practice: Learn how to integrate advanced treatment modalities into clinical practice, including assessing patient eligibility for bio photonic therapies, monitoring their progress, and understanding the broader implications for patient care and outcomes in optometry.
