Learning Objectives

  • understand how modulating leukostasis and endothelial apoptosis may help to protect the retinal vasculature
  • appreciate the benefits and limitations of the use of VEGF antagonists in the control of proliferative diabetic retinopathy
  • be aware of the roles of inhibiting angiopoietin-2, integrins and inflammation in the control of diabetic macular edema
  • appreciate the primary role of capillary damage in the genesis of diabetic retinopathy
  • understand the spatial and temporal factors which limit our ability to visualize retinal capillaries and the flow of cells through them
  • gain a broad overview of research findings to date using adaptive optics to image capillaries in the diabetic retina.
