* Case Discussion questions are attached. The case discussions are over 40 minutes in time allocation,  which work their way through the learning objectives with active participation for all the tables/ groups. 

Learning Objectives

• Learn the basic principles of the glaucoma assessment: e.g slit lamp examination, pachymetry, intraocular pressure measurement and various methods, visual field assessment , disc photography and OCT assessment. How to examine an optic disc and fundus in regards to glaucoma and common medical retina disorders.
• How to read a nerve fibre layer OCT and posterior pole OCT as it pertains to glaucoma. Common pitfalls and errors.
• Red flags when assessing a glaucoma patient: How not to miss a brain tumour, optic atrophy, papillloedema, papillitis, or congenital disc anomalies either clinically or on OCT/photography. Warning signs in the pattern of the visual field test result that should prompt neuro-imaging or referral.
• Medical management pearls in glaucoma: An overview of glaucoma drops and new therapies on the horizon. Adverse effects and the importance of compliance/follow up. Interventional therapies in the pipelines such as prostaglandin implants.
• Laser and surgery in glaucoma management. The role of glaucoma laser therapies such as: laser iridotomy, iridoplasty, and selective laser trabeculoplasty. Surgical options such as the istent inject combined with cataract surgery. Principles of glaucoma management in regards to angle closure, secondary causes of glaucoma, and in the context of uveitis. When to refer and initial management steps by the optometrist.
• Acute ocular & retinal emergencies: Initial assessment and management steps by the optometrist; When to refer e.g. acute posterior vitreous detachment, retinal break & retinal detachment; Retinal artery & vein occlusion; ocular ischaemic syndrome; Anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy; Anterior & posterior uveitis; vitreous haemorrhage etc
• Medical Retina Spot test: How to identify multiple common retina signs and disorders based on clinical photographs & OCT Initial steps in the investigation and management of these retinal disorders When to refer
• The co-management of common retinal disorders: from screening to management e.g. diabetic retinopathy Common investigations; Frequency of monitoring; When to refer back again
• An awareness of new and emerging therapies in the management of common retinal disorders. The latest clinic trial evidence in the management of AMD (age-related macular degeneration), Diabetic retinopathy, and Retinal vein occlusion. The ability to have a discussion with the patient about the current standard of care and potential options in the future.
