Activity Outline

The aim of this presentation is to familiarise attendees with the common post-operative challenges in patients who have recently undergone cataract or corneal surgery. Additionally, it aims to prepare optometrists with a foundational approach to initiating treatment for common corneal conditions such as ocular surface squamous neoplasia, recurrent corneal erosion syndrome, microbial keratitis and herpetic keratitis. The aim is to achieve a level of comfort with diagnosing normal and abnormal findings in these patients, which should prompt referral onto an ophthalmologist or allow independent management.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the common signs seen in the perioperative period following cataract and corneal surgery, what is normal, what is abnormal and what should prompt urgent referral to an ophthalmologist.
  • Diagnose and manage the common signs of corneal pathology such as herpetic keratitis, microbial keratitis and recurrent corneal erosion syndrome, with an understanding of when urgent referral to an ophthalmologist is required.
  • Identify suspicious features of ocular surface squamous neoplasia, differentiate this from a pterygium and identify the signs which should prompt urgent referral to an ophthalmologist.
