Seeing Beyond Vision Loss: Smart Glasses and Everyday Independence
Join the Macular Disease Foundation Australia’s informative webinar exploring how smart glasses can support people living with vision impairment to maintain their independence, confidence and connection in everyday life.
As assistive technology continues to evolve, optometrists play an important role in helping patients understand the support options available to them. This webinar will increase awareness of smart glasses as an emerging low vision aid and explore how they may assist people living with vision loss.
Presented by Abby Jayasuriya, Assistive Technology Specialist and Practice Lead at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, the session will provide an overview of smart glasses, including how they work, potential benefits and limitations, and practical considerations for accessing and using this technology. Drawing on both professional expertise and lived experience with retinitis pigmentosa, Abby will share valuable insights into the role of technology in supporting independence and participation.
The webinar will also feature Jean, a Macular Disease Foundation Australia community member, who will share her personal experience using smart glasses. Jean will discuss the impact this technology has had on her daily life, confidence and ability to remain engaged in the activities that matter most to her.
This session is ideal for health professionals seeking to expand their knowledge of assistive technology options and support pathways for patients living with vision loss.
