Activity Outline

Terrace Eye Centre are proud to present their Education Conference for Optometrists. This is an all day event and encompasses a wide range of therapeutic topics. The day commences with a Retinal component that will cover topics  including retinal  hemorrhages, epiretinal membranes,  retinal ischaemia and innovations in diagnosis of Inherited Retinal Diseases. The Glaucoma component includes  updates in the treatment of angle closure disease and the Corneal/ Lid section showcases the hidden dangers of eye rubbing and how to approach Cornel ectasia. The Plastic section covers Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction, management options for epiphora  and exploring the orbit. Dr Glasson will present a session on examining children in our Paediatrics session. Oncology will be covered looking at Choroidal Hemangioma and ocular surface tumours. All sessions have a Panel discussion where there will be an interesting case presented for table discussion.

Learning Objectives

• Identify common causes of symptoms associated with retinal conditions and decide when to refer and when to reassure
• Identify via clinical and OCT signs the presentation of retinal ischaemia due to PAMM and AMN
• list and understand common inherited retinal diseases contributing to vision loss
• Appreciate advances in genetic diagnosis of inherited retinal diseases and understand the different approaches to treatment of inherited retinal diseases
• Classify angle closure disease and risk stratify patients
• Discuss the ZIP and EAGLE trial and the implications to an Australian population
• Identify early patients at risk of eye rubbing and the complications of eye rubbing
• Manage strategies to reduce eye rubbing and understand the medical and surgical approaches to the complications of eye rubbing
• Discuss Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction (CNLDO) and related disorders
• Identify causes for epiphora in adults and have an understanding of the different management options for adults and children
• Apply evidence-based strategies to counsel patients and parents regarding CNLDO and when to refer appropriately
• Identify suspicious periocular/ocular lesions in adults and children
• Recognise key orbital anatomy and red-flag signs that indicate serious or urgent orbital disease
• Distinguish preseptal from orbital cellulitis based on clinical features and identify common orbital pathologies and their characteristic presentations and expected outcomes for major orbital conditions
• Discuss principles of management including referral and safe co management
• Discuss the importance of early eye examinations in children and to recognise early detection and typical signs and symptoms of common conditions
• Discuss the importance of collaboration and the optometrist role in providing early intervention
• Discuss the importance of early identification of patients with choroidal haemangioma
• Recognise the features for monitoring and which patients benefit from treatment
• Recognise key clinical features of common ocular surface tumours and how to use appropriate diagnostic tools
• Identify red-flag features that require urgent referral and to understand the management options of ocular surface tumours
• Explain the biomechanical and cellular mechanisms that eye rubbing contributes to corneal ectasia and ocular surface inflammatory disease
• Identify clinical signs that suggest habitual rubbing and differentiate rubbing related progression from natural disease course
• Apply evidence based strategies to counsel patients and intervene early to reduce vision threating sequelae
