Activity Outline
Terrace Eye Centre are hosting an education forum for Optometrists at Hotel Grand Chancellor Brisbane on Sunday 2 March 2025. It is our aim to work with our referring practitioners by meeting their individual requirements and providing their patients with the highest standard of care in a timely, compassionate and informed manner. Topics will include: Circadian Biology and the role of light in Retinal and Systemic health; Management of Posterior Capsular Ruptures; Retina Diagnoses and When to Refer Series: ‘Macular Fluid’; Post-Op Macular Edema and treatment approaches; My patient has had glaucoma surgery - but what exactly have they had done?; Surgical Glaucoma Case Studies; When Cataracts and Corneas Collide: Tricky decisions in anterior segment surgery; Contact lenses and biometry; Thyroid Eye Disease for Optometrists; Lumps, Bumps and Wonky Lids; Orbital Tumours - A journey into the orbit; Floppy Lids from Lax to Max; Sundries of oculoplastics lesions and lid malpositions; Ocular Surface Tumours; Iris and Ciliary Body Tumours; My Life is in your hands: a better future for those afflicted; Interesting case discussions.
Learning Objectives
- Outline the role of our light environment and better evaluate light sources and the timing of light and their effects on health
- Identify a posterior capsular rupture when a patient has undergone cataract surgery
- Assess a patient presenting with macular pathology and take focussed history
- Recognise the clinical signs and symptoms of macular edema following cataract surgery and other intraocular procedures
- Identify, understand, and discuss the relative benefits, risks and limitations of the various surgical glaucoma options; minimally invasive glaucoma surgery devices, minimally invasive bleb surgery and traditional glaucoma surgery
- Critically evaluate the outcomes of surgical cases and their impact on disease progression and patient quality of life
- Identify when to refer and co-manage patients requiring complex anterior segment surgery
- Identify discrepancies in biometry that may affect contact lens fitting or ocular health and address them appropriately
- Assess a patient with Thyroid Eye and advise treatment options
- Outline within the Oculoplastics domain of some of the common as well as potentially vision and life-threatening conditions periocular/orbital lesions and lid malposition
- Summarise the important examination and investigations to work up orbital patients
- Identify the signs and symptoms of floppy eyelid syndrome and implement conservative management strategies, with a sound understanding of when to refer for GP or specialist assistance
- Interpret diagnostic tests, including fluorescein staining, tear breakup time, and photographs of lesions
- Identify suspicious signs in ocular surface and anterior segment tumours
- Determine management considerations and patient outcomes for iris and ciliary body lesions
- Discern at risk choroidal melanocytic lesions
- Differentiate benign ocular conditions from malignancies
