Activity Outline

Modern Refractive Solutions & Contemporary Glaucoma Care

Navigating today’s expanding array of ophthalmic therapies can be challenging for clinicians and patients alike. This interactive CPD session uses real-world clinical case studies to examine practical decision-making frameworks across cataract refractive planning and modern glaucoma management.

Session Highlights

-     Matching patients eyes, personalities and needs to Refractive & IOL option. Practical strategies on how to achieve patient happiness through their cataract journey, from pertinent points  during optometry assessment and referral to biometry and IOL choice. Real patient cases will be discussed and the processes explained with strong optom audience participation encouraged.   We will explore the options of  Monofocal, EDOF, Monovision Plus, and Multifocal lenses, Monovisioon strategies and mix and match options  and discuss practical strategies for matching the right lens to the right patient for optimal satisfaction.

-    Glaucoma Evolution & MIGS: Trace the transformation of glaucoma management over the last few decades with focus on the current proven treatment options. Through case studies spanning various disease stages, we      will clarify appropriate treatment pathways, optimal referral timing, and long-term patient support strategies.

-    Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): We will look why this simple, effective and painless procedure should be considered as  first line treatment for glaucoma.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare the performance, benefits and compromises of modern extended depth of focus (EDOF) and monovision-plus lens options against traditional monofocal and multifocal IOLs.
  • Evaluate patient visual expectations, personalities, needs and lifestyle, as well as their ocular parameters to offer best suited IOL options.
  • Analyze clinical outcomes and data associated with contemporary refractive IOLs to improve shared decision-making and patient satisfaction
  • Appraise contemporary first-line and secondary therapeutic modalities for open-angle glaucoma, weighing the clinical benefits of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), medical therapy, and Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).
  • Appraise SLT Mechanism & Safety Profile: Explain the selective photothermolysis mechanism of SLT targeting pigmented trabecular meshwork cells, its non-destructive and repeatable nature.
  • Be familiar with the broad concepts of what is involved in performing SLT including the procedural setup, post-laser IOP monitoring protocols required for safe, effective SLT delivery. Develop confidence in counselling patients on what they can expect to experience with SLT treatment: what happens on the day of treatment, comfort, cost and aftercare.
  • Evaluate iStent Indications & Surgical Rationale: Describe the mechanism of action of trabecular micro-bypass stents (iStent) in restoring natural aqueous drainage through Schlemm’s canal, identifying ideal clinical candidates.
  • Evaluate Patient Adherence & Treatment Burden: Assess how interventional options (SLT and iStent) address key clinical limitations of chronic drop therapy, including poor patient compliance, dosing regimen complexity, and preservative-induced ocular surface toxicity.
