Activity Outline

The Optical Company invites all optometrists to join a free, interactive online webinar presented by Dr Brendan Cronin, Corneal and Anterior Segment Surgeon at the Queensland Eye Institute and Focus Vision Clinic.

This engaging session will provide optometrists with a practical overview of modern refractive surgery, including LASIK, customised laser treatments, corneal lenticule extraction (SMILE, CLEAR and SILK), and Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL). Dr Cronin will also discuss patient suitability, key differences between procedures, and how to confidently set realistic post-operative expectations.

With expertise in refractive surgery and keratoconus management, Dr Cronin will deliver valuable, clinically relevant insights to support optometrists in guiding patients through their refractive surgery journey.

Learning Objectives

  • describe the basic differences between standard LASIK and "customized" versions (like topography-guided) so they can explain to patients why one might be recommended over another.
  • explain the general advantages and disadvantages of corneal lenticule extraction (SMILE, CLEAR, and SILK) compared to traditional flap-based LASIK.
  • identify which patients are better suited for an Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) rather than laser-based surgery, particularly regarding high prescriptions and thin corneas.
  • provide clear post-operative expectations to patients, including typical recovery times and common side effects like temporary dry eye.
