Activity Outline
Despite decades of clinical progress and product innovation, toric soft contact lenses (SCLs) remain significantly under prescribed in many markets, particularly for patients with low-to-moderate astigmatism.
In this article, Megan Zabell explores key barriers to prescribing toric SCLs that have been identified by eye care professionals across multiple markets, and examines the clinical evidence behind them. Many of these longstanding concerns no longer align with what we now know about modern toric lens design, so addressing them is essential to improve patient care and to increase practitioner confidence in correcting astigmatism.
Learning Objectives
- Identify patients who may benefit from correcting their astigmatism using soft toric contact lenses,
- Explain the benefits of correcting astigmatism with contact lenses over using spherical correction in patients with astigmatism, and
- Understand the mechanism of stabilisation in most toric soft contact lenses.
