Activity Outline

Join us for our latest webinar designed for health professionals working in diabetes care. This session will explore the management of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema, alongside the lived experience of managing these conditions from a patient’s perspective.

Our presenters include Dr Rajeev Chalasani, a patient-focused ophthalmologist with extensive experience in managing diabetes-related eye conditions, and Jo McKenzie, a community member with experience in managing living with diabetic macular oedema. Together, they will explore the clinical realities of managing diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema and highlight the importance of holistic, person-centred care in supporting people living with these conditions.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the lived experience of diabetic macular oedema (DMO) and gain insight into the personal and emotional impact of living with diabetes-related eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema.
  • Recognise the clinical presentation and management of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and DMO. Enhance knowledge of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and current treatment approaches for DR and DMO, including the role of intravitreal and emerging therapies.
  • Appreciate the importance of patient-centred care and holistic support. Understand how considering the whole person, beyond the clinical presentation, can improve engagement, adherence to treatment, and overall wellbeing in people living with diabetes-related eye conditions.
  • Explore the role of eye health professionals in collaborative diabetes care. Understand how optometrists, orthoptists, and ophthalmologists contribute to early detection, referral, and ongoing management of DR and DMO, and how they can work effectively alongside other health professionals in the diabetes care team.
