Activity Outline

Activity Outline

Cataract remains one of the most frequently managed conditions in optometric practice, and optimal co-management requires both clinical knowledge and a strong understanding of surgical care pathways. This CPD webinar, presented by Dr Ryan Nugent as part of the Vision for Life Institute Webinar Series, will provide a comprehensive overview of the modern approach to cataract patients.

The session will begin with a discussion on recognising and classifying cataracts, including how to identify the various subtypes based on clinical signs and patient history. From there, Dr Nugent will explore how cataracts impact visual function, reviewing the use of assessment tools and applying clinical reasoning to determine when intervention is warranted.

A focus will then be placed on intraocular lens (IOL) selection, surgical planning, and intraoperative considerations, helping optometrists appreciate the factors influencing surgical decision-making and patient outcomes. Participants will also be guided through best practice for pre-operative counselling, ensuring patients are well-prepared and supported ahead of surgery.

The session will conclude with an overview of post-operative care, including monitoring recovery, recognising common complications, and understanding when collaborative management with ophthalmologists is essential. Real-world case examples will be integrated throughout to reinforce a practical, problem-solving approach to cataract management.
