Activity Outline
This continuing professional development event brings retina specialists and optometrists together to explore current best practice in the diagnosis, monitoring, and referral of major retinal diseases. Sessions will provide practical updates on proliferative diabetic retinopathy, geographic atrophy, and retinal vein occlusions, with a focus on early detection, imaging interpretation, treatment advances, and shared care pathways. Attendees will gain insight into evolving surgical and medical management, referral timing, and patient counselling strategies. Designed to support evidence-based clinical decision-making, the program aims to strengthen collaboration between community optometry and specialist retinal care for improved patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives
- Identify features of vision threatening retinopathy and understand how quickly chronic diabetes can lead to emergent vision loss.
- Discuss the scientific trials that support a novel injectable treatment for dry Age Related Macula Degeneration and understand how to apply this experimental data to real world applications within an environment framed by regulatory approvals, pilot programs and public funding.
- Investigate, manage, triage and treat spontaneous vision threatening retinal vein occlusion in apparently healthy individuals.
- Advise the relatives of patients with AMD on the ways to test, and examine risks with genophenotyping
- Discuss how to treat corneal erosion
