Learning Objectives
- At the completion of the presentations optometrists will be able tot understand the treatment range and options for patients who present to their practice with hyperopic prescriptions. What factors are important when assessing a hyperopic patient for refractive surgery and why are they important.
- Optometrists will understand the importance of a cycloplegic refraction for hypermetropic patients, what to do with the results and what to counsel he patients for when discussing refractive surgery options, for example monovision and ocular dominance
- At the completion of this presentation optometrists will have more of an understanding of the patient pathway when undergoing refractive surgery. Optometrists will gain an insight to the duration of each stage in refractive surgery, e.g. A patient undergoing Lasik refractive surgery- how long does the flap take to be created? How many microns is the flap and why?
- At the completion of this presentation optometrists will have an understanding of the post- operative management for various refractive surgeries, and gaining an insight as to why this therapeutic management is important. What is the use of Flucon or Voltaren drops in the management of post-operative PRK patients?
- At the completion of this presentation optometrists will have a good understanding of the use of corneal topography when assessing a patient for refractive surgery, what are the key areas to look at on a topography scan and why. Understanding the maximum range of inferior steepening accepted when assessing patients for refractive surgery.
- At the completion of this presentation optometrists will have a greater understanding in custom wavefront guided refractive laser treatments and when it should be considered along with knowing what clinical tests and assessments are required.
- At the completion of this presentation optometrists will know what PTK refractive surgery is, what is involved, indications, selection criteria and contra-indications.
- Optometrists will be able to asses keratoconus patients, and understand the optimal time for referral to ensure best visual outcome for the patient.
