Activity Outline
Visionare Eye Specialists Education Evening will be structured into three individual sessions, each with a total duration of 30 minutes. Each session will be led by one of our three Specialist Doctors, who will share educational insights within their respective fields of expertise. During each session, the presenting doctor will deliver a brief lecture supported by PowerPoint slides, followed by interactive polling using multiple-choice questions to assess knowledge and reinforce key learning points. Participants will then break into smaller groups for 10-minute discussions focused on practical examples, case studies, and treatment approaches. Following this period of deeper engagement, the groups will reconvene as a larger forum to share insights and key takeaways, allowing for discussion and feedback from both the presenting doctors and fellow attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Secondary Glaucomas: Distinguishing from POAG and Targeted Management By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Identify the major categories of secondary glaucoma and distinguish their clinical and gonioscopic features from POAG. Outline specific management strategies for the most common secondary glaucoma subtypes and identify when specialist ophthalmology referral or surgical intervention is required.
- Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying each form of secondary glaucoma and explain how these mechanisms inform targeted treatment selection. Apply an evidence-based approach to the investigation of a patient with suspected secondary glaucoma, including appropriate use of gonioscopy, imaging, and systemic workup.
- Retinal Presentations: Urgency Triage and Referral Pathways By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Classify a wide range of medical and surgical retinal presentations by clinical urgency Describe the key clinical features, investigation findings, and natural history of common acute retinal conditions including retinal detachment, central and branch retinal artery and vein occlusions, vitreous haemorrhage, and posterior uveitis.
- Apply a structured triage framework to real-world retinal presentations and communicate effectively with receiving ophthalmology services regarding urgency and clinical context. Identify the indications for medical versus surgical retinal intervention and understand the optometrist's role in the co-management pathway for patients undergoing retinal treatment.
- Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutic Decision-Making By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Describe the mechanisms of action, clinical indications, contraindications, and side-effect profiles of the major drug classes used in the management of glaucoma, including prostaglandin analogues, beta-blockers, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, alpha-2 agonists, and ROCK inhibitors.
- Apply a structured decision-making framework for initiating topical IOP-lowering therapy in newly diagnosed or suspected glaucoma, including target IOP setting and selection of first-line agent based on patient and disease factors. Recognise situations where prescribing scope, therapeutic endorsement requirements, or clinical complexity necessitate specialist referral, and describe how to manage the handover process effectively.
- Identify appropriate first-line and escalation pharmacological options for common ocular infections (bacterial, viral, and fungal) and inflammatory conditions (anterior uveitis, episcleritis, scleritis), and understand the principles governing safe corticosteroid use in the eye.
