Activity Outline

Welcome to the Working with interpreters module for optometrists.

This module aims to support you to know when and how to engage interpreters, set up your clinic, and ensure effective communication during consultations. It should take about 1 hour to complete plus time for assessment.

Learning Objectives

  • Determine when professional interpreting services are necessary
  • Describe how to access high-quality interpreting services, including considerations for language and cultural sensitivity
  • Brief interpreters before appointments and introduce them to patients, explaining their role clearly
  • Manage the setup of the clinic for interpreting services, including for in-person and telephone interpreters
  • Maintain direct interaction with patients while using interpreters
  • Use techniques such as speaking clearly, adjusting the pace, and using visual aids to facilitate accurate and effective interpretation
