Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance of local GPs and pharmacists in patient care.
  • Importance of shared care and collaboration for well-being of your patients
  • How to write letters to GPs and explain what investigations are required for common ocular conditions.
  • To identify the ocular conditions which require systemic workups with a GP or hospital
  • To understand the utility and limitations of different referral pathways that may be offered to optometric patients
  • To understand the patient’s rights and practitioner’s responsibilities in the context of initiating a referral
  • To gain insight into how to effectively develop rapport with patients inside and outside the consultation room
  • To understand how to communicate to young children particularly during testing
  • To identify the appropriate tests for children compared to an adult examination.
  • To identify and prevent common causes of patients with eye complaints
  • To understand the red herrings of a problem patient
  • To learn the most common types of complaints patients have with a prescription
  • To learn the conditions where therapeutic prescription is necessary and the steps involved in writing a therapeutic prescription.
  • Understand the difference between a PBS and non-PBS prescription.
  • To be able to identify when an authority prescription is required and learn how to obtain one. To identify the streamlined codes available for optometrists to use.
  • Describe minimum components of the contact lens related case history
  • Identify the clinical procedures used in practice that may best guide contact lens fitting
  • Understand the value of managing patient expectations in contact lens consultations
  • Know the most appropriate Medicare item number for various clinical scenarios
  • Understand the differences between a Private, Bulk-billed, DVA and Aviation eye examination.
  • To understand and learn from common legal pitfalls optometrists have fallen into such as poor record keeping and missed ocular health diagnoses.
  • To understand the of a patient and optometrist in the consultation room. Discussing common complications such as driving standards and children parents or guardians not present.
  • To learn how the Australian Tax system works for Optometry
  • To be able to appropriately manage bills and finances and to understand what qualifies as a tax-deductible item
  • To discuss the various tests an optometrists have at their disposal and the approximate to perform them in a clinical setting
  • To become more confident in performing a comprehensive eye examination under time constraints
  • To determine the necessary tests for each consultation
