Pharma – Australia’s leading ocular therapeutics magazine

Pharma was launched in 2008 by Optometry Australia to support the emergence of therapeutics in optometry with the final issue published in September of 2020.

Pharma was published quarterly (March, June, September and December) and offered Australian members six accredited clinical CPD points per issue. It featured quality editorial with a strong emphasis on stories that promote cutting-edge therapeutic developments and research as well as clinical case studies.

Oral therapeutics update

In late 2025, the Optometry Board of Australia consulted on proposed changes to the Registration Standard: Endorsement for Scheduled Medicines and associated guidelines that would enable endorsed optometrists to prescribe oral medicines for eye conditions, in addition to topical medicines. Optometry Australia through its advocacy, generated a high volume of submissions that are currently being reviewed by the Board to develop its recommendation to Health Ministers.

Tasmanian Budget focuses on prevention and primary care but eye health missing

The 2026–27 Tasmanian Budget delivers a strong focus on fiscal restraint, preventive health and community-based care, but contains no direct investment in eye health, optometry or blindness prevention. While eye health was not specifically referenced in the Budget Papers, several priorities align closely with Optometry Australia advocacy agenda.

Acknowledgement of Country

In the spirit of reconciliation Optometry Australia acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.
