Stronger support, lower costs in sight: Exploring a one organisation model

We’re exploring ways to deliver stronger support for every member, preserve local connections, and reduce the cost of membership.

Discussions between Optometry Australia and the five state organisations are progressing with a clear purpose: deliver stronger support for every member, secure the profession’s long-term sustainability, and reduce membership costs over time by cutting duplication and complexity.

We’re exploring alternatives to the current federated model, including consolidating legal entities to operate as a single organisation. The intent is to lead through unity, building one integrated organisation that delivers consistently, speaks with one voice, and strengthens support for every member – whilst preserving and enhancing the local relationships and responsiveness that define our profession. 

What we’re exploring 

• A streamlined structure with unified governance and operations. 
• A consistent national member experience across services, CPD and advocacy. 
• Reduced administrative overheads enabling lower member fees.

• Stronger support: clearer access to services regardless of where you live and faster problems solving. 
• Stronger voice: a coordinated national platform on policy, funding and scope. 
• Better value: by removing duplication, our goal is to lower membership costs. 

Due diligence and safeguards

Independent legal, tax and financial advice is informing the design, so proposed changes are robust and responsible. We will only bring forward a proposal that protects members’ interests and the profession’s future.

Have your say – members will decide 

Further engagement with members is planned in the new year. You’ll be invited to review details, ask questions and provide feedback before any final proposal is put to a member vote. If a proposal proceeds, members will decide whether change goes ahead. 

Key services won’t change

Our commitment to local connections, timely member support, and advancing optometry and community eye health won’t change.
