The Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) 2027 Research Grants Program is now open, offering funding opportunities for established and emerging Australian researchers undertaking innovative research into macular and retinal diseases.

The program supports research aimed at advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of macular and retinal disease, with the potential to improve outcomes for people living with these conditions.

MDFA is Australia’s largest non-government investor in macular and retinal disease research, having committed more than $7.2 million to 44 Australian research projects since 2011.

Funding opportunities

The 2027 program includes two funding streams:

Grant Family Fund awards
Supporting early-career researchers undertaking innovative, high-impact ‘blue sky’ research projects.

  • Funding of up to $50,000
  • Project duration of up to one year

MDFA Research Grants
Supporting research across disciplines that has the potential to advance understanding and improve outcomes in macular and retinal disease.

  • Funding of up to $200,000
  • Project duration of up to three years

Applications now open

The application process involves two stages, beginning with a Stage 1 Expression of Interest (EOI).

Information about eligibility criteria, application guidelines and application forms for both funding streams is available on the MDFA website.

EOI applications will be assessed through a review process involving MDFA’s Research Grants Committee, which comprises experts in macular and retinal disease research.

Stage 1 EOI applications close at 11.59pm AEDT on 11 October 2026.

Completed EOI applications must be submitted via email to research@mdfoundation.com.au; researchers with questions about the grants or application process can contact the foundation through the same email address.

Researchers are also encouraged to share this opportunity with colleagues and research networks who may be interested in applying.
