Independent optometrists are set to take an important step forward in digital health, with the latest Optomate software update introducing electronic prescriptions (e-scripts) for the first time within independent optometry practice management systems.

This milestone reflects the sector’s readiness to embracing new technologies that benefit both practitioners and patients.

Coupled with free eMIMS access for all members, the arrival of e-scripts means many optometrists now have the tools to prescribe and manage medications more safely and efficiently, in line with best-practice standards across health professions. This progress also reflects the growing expectations of patients, who increasingly value the convenience and security that digital prescribing provides. By embedding this functionality into everyday workflows, independent practices can offer more seamless, evidence-based care that puts patients at the centre.

The move also lays important groundwork for the future expansion of therapeutic scope. Optometry Australia continues to advocate for the inclusion of oral medicines within optometrists’ prescribing rights, highlighting the benefits of enabling timely, comprehensive care – especially in regional and remote areas where access to GPs or ophthalmologists may be limited.

‘This update is a significant step towards ensuring optometry remains at the forefront of clinical innovation, digital health and integrated primary care,’ said Sarah Davies, OA Director, Advocacy. ‘It demonstrates the profession’s readiness to lead and to deliver care that meets the evolving needs of patients today and into the future.’

Chris Monks, Director of Monkey Software, said, ‘We’re excited to announce our partnership with Parchment.Health, bringing the Optomate user community the first seamlessly integrated ePrescribing solution for the optometry industry – directly embedded within the Optomate examination workflow. This new capability is available in both Optomate Touch (on-premises) and Optomate.Net (cloud), ensuring accessibility across all platforms. It was developed in response to user feedback, and we’re proud to deliver on what our community asked for.’

Optometry Australia welcomed the development as part of a broader vision to strengthen the profession’s role within Australia’s healthcare system, supporting practitioners to deliver high-quality care in every setting. As the landscape evolves, Optometry Australia is focused on supporting members with the tools, resources and advocacy they need to deliver high-quality care wherever it’s needed.
