Allison McKendrick has been chosen to become the next Head of the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne.

Associate Professor McKendrick, who is an Optometrists Association national board director, will begin her three-year term on 1 April 2014. She will be the first woman to hold the position.

Professor McKendrick is currently deputy head of the department. She has a special interest in glaucoma detection and management, and visual perception and ageing.

She will succeed as head Professor Algis Vingrys, who will remain as a professor in the department.
