The Australian optometry community mourns the loss of John Rees, a dedicated leader and tireless advocate for the field of optometry. As a former President of Optometry Australia (then the Australian Optometrical Association) from 1984-1986, John was instrumental in advancing the profession and improving the eye health of many through his dedication and passion.

During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to promote the profession and ensure that optometrists had the support they needed to provide the best possible care to their patients. In 1997 John Rees achieved international recognition when he was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and in 2010 he was awarded life membership of OA (Tasmania).

John’s commitment to continuing education and professional development was a driving force behind many of his initiatives. He understood that the world of optometry was constantly evolving, and that optometrists needed to stay up-to-date with the latest research, technology, and best practices to provide the best care possible.

Under the guidance of Joe Chakman, John introduced the Practice Enhancement Program, which showed individual optometrists how to better manage and market their practices. This was formalised and eventually became ProVision.

In the 2013 book Towards the Vision Splendid by Keith Mackriell, which tells the story of optometry in Tasmania, John said: ‘The future is bright for optometry, especially here in Tasmania. We have a relationship of mutual respect from other healthcare professionals, the scope of practice has expanded to cover every need. As with other professions, there is a choice of practice style from which the public can choose.’

Beyond his contributions to the profession, John was a beloved colleague and friend to many in the optometry community.

Andrew Hogan, fellow Tasmanian and also a former President of Optometry Australia said: ‘John was the most influential person in my life and the reason I got involved with Optometry Australia as well as my motivation to become national president.

‘Last Christmas, just before he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, Kate Gifford and I went to see him at the cellar door at his vineyard. Three former OA presidents, he quite liked that.

‘John never lost interest in what OA was doing,’ Andrew added. ‘The last time I saw him he could no longer speak but he used his communication device to ask all about current projects and what the national office was up to. He never lost interest in the profession.’

John’s warmth, humour, and kindness will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
