Activity Outline
The incidence of dry eye disease is on the rise, and we are increasingly aware of the significant impact it can have on a person’s quality of life. While some researchers are currently focussed on understanding more about the causes of dry eye (see the review of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface report on lifestyle factors in this issue), others are intent on finding new, more effective treatments.
In this article, Adjunct Associate Professor Alex Hui provides an overview of some of the molecules that are currently in development to treat dry eye, their mechanisms of action against the disease, and their reported clinical effects as found in the peer-reviewed literature.
Learning Objectives
- Be aware of Cyclosporine A and its mechanism of action in treating dry eye disease
- Be aware of novel anti-inflammatory targets in the pipeline
- Realise the potential for nasal delivery routes to effectively treat symptoms of dry eye disease
- Be aware of new agents for meibomian gland dysfunction coming to market
