Security update

To align with best security practices and help keep members’ personal information safe, we have introduced two-factor authentication (2FA) on the Optometry Australia member portal and website. This extra verification step when members log in helps protect data and accounts and will be required from 3 November 2025. Follow our quick, one-time setup here.

Oral therapeutics update

In late 2025, the Optometry Board of Australia consulted on proposed changes to the Registration Standard: Endorsement for Scheduled Medicines and associated guidelines that would enable endorsed optometrists to prescribe oral medicines for eye conditions, in addition to topical medicines. Optometry Australia through its advocacy, generated a high volume of submissions that are currently being reviewed by the Board to develop its recommendation to Health Ministers.

Tasmanian Budget focuses on prevention and primary care but eye health missing

The 2026–27 Tasmanian Budget delivers a strong focus on fiscal restraint, preventive health and community-based care, but contains no direct investment in eye health, optometry or blindness prevention. While eye health was not specifically referenced in the Budget Papers, several priorities align closely with Optometry Australia advocacy agenda.

Acknowledgement of Country

In the spirit of reconciliation Optometry Australia acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.
