Activity Outline

Optometry has seen significant changes over the last 20 years, with optometrists transitioning from community refractionists to core members of healthcare systems, educators and researchers. In an era where non-medical ophthalmic care is evolving, enhanced and advanced practice are now the main roles in hospital optometry, with standards in primary care community also rising; community enhanced schemes, laser procedures, intravitreal injections and autonomous hospital clinics, alongside academic activity and research outputs now place optometrists in a unique position to reshape ophthalmic care delivery.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate the contribution of optometrists in various healthcare systems and assess how these can be utilised to promote the optometrists’ role in the delivery of ophthalmic care locally
  • Understand the scope of optometry across different countries
  • Formulate a professional development plan, capitalising on the international optometry scene
  • Understand and appraise the role of optometrists as researchers and educators
