Activity Outline

On Sunday 28 July local ophthalmologists; Dr Graeme Kelly, Dr John Glastonbury and Dr Ian Reddie will hold a day of interactive education for optometrists.  The day will cover topics such as successful glaucoma management, oculoplastics, rare retinal conditions and an update on cataract surgery.  The event will be attended by representatives from pharmaceutical companies that supply intravitreal injections for the management of retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration allowing optometrists a more in-depth exposure to the treatment that occurs following patient referral.  There will be time for attendees to interact with their fellow colleagues as well as presenters to discuss new and emerging treatments and how they may apply to cases encountered in their everyday practice.  The event will also be attended by representatives from suppliers of intraocular lenses and there will be time for attendees to have hands-on experience with the instrumentation utilised in cataract surgery.  

Learning Objectives

  • 1. Discuss new and emerging glaucoma management options 2. Have an understanding of what defines successful glaucoma management 3. Understand the clinical findings that would indicate the need for an alteration in glaucoma treatment 4. Discuss difficult diagnostic and management cases with colleagues to investigate alternative treatment approaches
  • 1. To gain exposure to common procedures utilised in oculoplastic surgery 2. To identify cranial nerves of interest when diagnosing ocular disorders 3. To develop an understanding of referral criteria for ocular lesions requiring further investigation and/or treatment
  • 1. To become familiar with the intravitreal injections utilised in current practice 2. To be exposed to the procedure of intravitreal injection including hands-on demonstration of technique and patient set-up 3. To work through case demonstrations of conditions requiring intravitreal therapy 4. To become familiar with new and emerging intravitreal therapies
  • 1. Develop an understanding of the classifications of diabetic eye disease 2 Gain experience in the appropriate referral timeline for diabetic eye disease 3. Understand the role of medical treatment for diabetic eye disease (e.g. Lipidil)
  • 1. Discuss case studies with fellow colleagues in a group setting and reflect and critic management options 2. Develop skills to evaluate research data and apply this in a clinical setting to improve evidence-based practice
  • 1. To gain exposure to the steps involved in cataract surgery 2. Experience cataract surgery from a surgeon’s perspective through use of instrumentation on model eyes 3. To gain an understanding of the intraocular lens selection process
  • 1. Correctly identify the most common degenerative lesions of the peripheral retina 2. Recognise the frequency of asymptomatic findings and likelihood of management 3. Correctly identify the clinical signs and symptoms of chloroquine retinopathy 4. Recognise the retinal signs and symptoms of the most common drug toxicities
