Activity Outline

This educational event will address a number of topics relevant to the treatment of paediatric eye conditions.

Learning Objectives

  • Know how to assess vision in babies
  • Recognise features of poor visual function in babies
  • Appreciate the causes of severe vision loss in babies
  • Recognise causes of esotropia in babies
  • Understand the differences between pseudostrabismus and strabismus
  • Appreciate the utilisation of clinical photography to assess ocular alignment in babies
  • Have awareness of the StePS (Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening) program
  • Recognise criteria for referral to an eyecare professional
  • Have a basic understanding of prescribing glasses in school children
  • Understand the risk factors for myopia development
  • Be aware of strategies for avoiding the onset and progression of myopia
  • Implement basic management approach to controlling myopia progression
  • Appreciate causes of a red eye (s) in children
  • Recognise red flags signs of serious ocular disease in children with a red eye
  • Understand when to refer children with red eye (s)
  • Understand symptoms described by children who say ‘ weird’ things
  • Recognise causes of children presenting who say ‘weird’ things
  • Appreciate when symptoms of children who say ‘weird things’ which would prompt a referral
  • Understand the causes of a swollen eye
  • Recognise clinical differences between periorbital and orbital cellulitis
  • Know when to refer a child with a swollen eye
