Activity Outline
Healthcare services provide a key opportunity to intervene in child protection. This article highlights the importance of having sufficient resources and knowledge to identify and respond to domestic and family violence, maltreatment of children and situations where a child may need protection from unintentional harm.
Learning Objectives
- Identify subtle signs and symptoms of harm, neglect and abuse in children, including emotional and psychological abuse that may be encountered incidentally within a consultation
- Have the confidence to investigate for retinal haemorrhage/s in trauma cases (particularly infants) where the history indicates clinical need
- Identify and record trauma indicators, with detail to history/events described (including photographic images where possible)
- Offer ongoing management, support service information and up-to-date local resources for those families susceptible to domestic violence
- Utilize a more proactive approach in the prompt order and collection of spectacles for children in need
- Navigate and support government or charity supply options where financial hardship is evident
