SURGICAL, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION SERVICE (STARS) Public Cataract/IOL Surgery Service CPD Event


STARS Public Cataract/IOL Surgery Service CPD Event aims to educate community optometrists about our unique service and facility, including updates on our referral criteria and triage pathway. Education will be provided to attendees by Ophthalmologist, Dr Mark Loane, and Optometrists Courtenay Lind and Mina You, sharing their knowledge and expertise on the patient pathway and clinical management of cataracts and pterygia through STARS Ophthalmology service.

Schedule: 6pm - 6:30pm = registration/refreshments; 6:30pm – 8:00pm = presentations

Optometry Australia (OA) accredited CPD points

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the purpose and structure of the STARS ophthalmology service
  • Recognise clinical signs and symptoms for patient cataract referral
  • Assess the eligibility of a cataract patient using the Visual Disability Assessment (VDA) questionnaire
  • Understand STARS referral criteria for and the triage pathway for patients requiring surgery
  • Have an understanding of the pathophysiological processes of cataract and pterygium
  • Have a knowledge of the therapeutic management of cataract and pterygium patients post-surgery
  • Understand how to manage discharged patients and recognise red flags requiring ophthalmological review
