Activity Outline

Session 1:  Scrutinising structure in high myopia: staphyloma, stretching, and sequelae by Nicola Lee

The term “pathological myopia” refers to structural changes in the eye that come about due to excessive axial length. With the increasing availability of advanced ocular imaging over the last decade or so, many optometrists in practice are now able to visualise and monitor pathologies associated with high myopia. This presentation will explore common sequelae of increased axial length using a case-based approach, and leave you with some clinical pearls to help you manage your high myopes in practice. With half the world’s population expected to have some degree of myopia by 2050, this is one not to miss!

Session 2: Managing high myopia: From early intervention to complication prevention by Dr Dr Rakhee Shah

This session will provide a background on myopia and high myopia prevalence, clinical evaluation and discuss effectiveness of myopia control strategies in highly myopic patients. Through analysis of current clinical evidence, we'll explore how evidence-based decision-making enables practitioners to effectively manage high myopia and confidently meet diverse patient needs.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the tractional forces at play when myopic staphyloma is present, and how these forces impact retinal appearance and structure
  • Differentiate between glaucoma and myopic optic neuropathy
  • Identify clinical red flags that require ophthalmology referral
  • Evaluate the clinical implications of high myopia and identify its associated ocular complications through evidence-based research findings
  • Compare and contrast current myopia control strategies, analysing their effectiveness and limitations in preventing high myopia progression
  • Apply evidence-based criteria to select appropriate myopia management solutions for diverse patient cases, particularly those at risk of developing high myopia
