Activity Outline

We’re thrilled to invite you to our exclusive Interactive Seminar this June at Emu Hall Bar & Kitchen — our very first event in the Nepean region! After hosting successful events at our Mosman clinic, we're excited to bring this engaging experience closer especially since opening our new sister practice at the Nepean Health Hub!

This evening promises a perfect blend of education, networking opportunities, small group discussions and a hands-on session that will help enhance your skills.

A big thank you to our wonderful sponsors at Device Technologies for making this all possible. Agenda for the evening:

    (1) Dr. Mitchell Lee will provide valuable insights on "Understanding Retinal vascular diseases and Retinal Ischaemia: Insights from a Vitreoretinal Surgeon"

    (2) Dr. Erica Darian-Smith will dive into "Exploring Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL): Advancements, Indications, and Patient Outcomes."

    (3) The Device Technologies team will guide us through an interactive hands-on workshop on how to load an ICL into an injector — a practical skill you won’t want to miss!

Dinner and Drinks will be provided and will commence at 6pm
(Presentations will begin at 6:30 pm)

Event Address: Emu Hall Bar & Kitchen   |   2-26 Great Western Hwy, Emu Plains NSW 2750

This is a face-to-face event and space is limited, so be sure to register early — it’s first-come, first-serve. We look forward to seeing you there!

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the pathophysiology of retinal ischemic events, including diabetic retinopathy, retinal artery occlusion (RAO) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO)
  • Recognise the key clinical signs of retinal ischemia, such as cotton wool spots, retinal hemorrhages, and the “cherry red spot” in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO)
  • Learn the different types of retinal ischemic conditions (e.g. PDR, CRAO, BRAO, CRVO, BRVO) and their clinical implications
  • Identify stages and risk factors for ischemic retinopathies, including diabetes, hypertension, and vascular disease
  • Understand the management strategies for retinal ischemic events, including the role of anti-VEGF therapy, laser treatment, and steroid injections
  • Appreciate the importance of timely referral to a vitreoretinal specialist for retinal ischemic conditions, including when to act on urgent cases
  • Enhance skills in retinal imaging for diagnosing ischemic retinopathies, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography
  • Develop strategies for collaboration between optometrists and vitreoretinal specialists to optimise care for patients with retinal ischemia
  • Explain the basic structure and function of Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs) and how they correct refractive errors
  • Recognise the patient populations that would benefit most from ICL implantation
  • Understand the pre-operative diagnostic tests and criteria needed to assess a patient for ICL surgery
  • Describe the ICL surgical procedure, including the implantation process, and understand the post-operative care protocols
  • Identify potential risks and complications associated with ICL surgery, such as cataract formation, elevated intraocular pressure, endothelial cell loss and narrow vaults
  • Review the clinical data regarding the long-term efficacy, safety, and patient satisfaction with ICLs
  • Gain insight into the surgical preparation process for ICL implantation from an ophthalmic surgeon’s perspective
  • Explain the purpose and function of the ICL injector system and its role in refractive surgery
  • Appreciate the importance of precise lens handling and sterile technique in achieving optimal surgical outcomes
