Improving access to eye health care for Victorians

It has been well documented that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant adverse impact on the health system and access to timely eye health care for Victorians. This significant strain on resources is due to staff shortages, increased numbers of patients with complex or chronic eye and vision issues requiring more frequent care, and longer wait times to access appointments.

Optometry Victoria South Australia have recommended to the Victorian government that five per cent of the Victorian health budget should be provided for a state-wide ‘Healthy Living’ health promotion campaign to improve the overall health and wellbeing of the community including reducing the pressure on tertiary eye health systems. The campaign should include eye health as a priority through optimising the use of the optometry workforce, along with other aspects of health and wellbeing, so that people get help before it is too late.
