Learning Objectives

  • How the method of Vector Planning can treat the optimum amount of astigmatism in refractive laser surgery.
  • Understanding the analysis of astigmatic outcomes for incisional, cataract and refractive surgery.
  • What options are available to optimise astigmatism treatment in the cataract patient
  • Evaluate their current approaches to deciding when and where it is appropriate to prescribe an antibiotic, either therapeutically or prophylactically
  • Advise their patients on the pros and cons of using an antibiotic as part of the intervention for their presenting complaint
  • Recommend an antibiotic that is both appropriate to the patient, and the patient’s context, and prescribe the antibiotic both effectively and safely.
  • Describe the novel approaches of monitoring and treating glaucoma (such as pressure-monitoring contact lenses, contact lenses that dispense medication and implantable micro-pumps)
  • Discuss the mechanisms of action of two new drops – Vyzulta and Rhopressa – to treat glaucoma
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the variety of procedures that employ minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
  • Explain the potential benefits that are offered by genetic and cellular regeneration therapies
  • Determine whether the title ‘Doctor’ is relevant and useful for optometrists to adopt in clinical practice.
  • List the evidence for and against the role of Omega 3s in the alleviation of the signs and symptoms of dry eye
  • Understand the anatomy of the retinal and choroidal vasculature in the healthy eye
  • Analyse and interpret OCT-Angiography scans and reports
  • Compare and contrast OCT-Angiography with fundus fluorescein angiography
  • Understand the clinical imperative for actively managing childhood myopia
  • Appreciate the evidence base for optical, pharmacological and environmental interventions
  • Consideration of individualised management strategies for the paediatric myope
  • List the features and pathology of early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and discuss the importance of complement factor H in the process
  • Explain the mechanism of the Ellex 2RT procedure and the effect of nanosecond laser treatment on the retina
  • Discuss the key aspects of the Laser Intervention in Early Age-related Macular Degeneration (LEAD) study
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of nascent geographic atrophy (nGA)
  • Recognise the effect of reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) on the effect of the 2RT laser
  • Recognise the potential of the 2RT laser in the treatment of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR).
  • Describe the elements of a veterinary ophthalmology consultation
  • Understand the range of visual systems that are represented in the animal kingdom
  • Know the functional disorders and pathological problems that affect certain species of household pets
  • Understand the interaction between binocular vision and myopia
  • Appreciate the optical basis of binocular vision changes in myopia controlling contact lenses
  • Consider the patient-specific factors in myopia controlling contact lenses, including cases
  • Identify the determinants (barriers and facilitators) of eye care delivery
  • Develop an enhanced awareness and understanding of the role of implementation science in addressing gaps in eye care delivery
  • Self-reflect on those changes, actions, and measures that are most likely to facilitate or enable good glaucoma and diabetic eye care delivery.
  • Describe the range of important anatomical and physiological changes that are associated with ageing and the implications for optometrists
  • List the ‘geriatric giants’ and the geriatric syndromes
  • Contrast the salient aspects of confusion, delirium and dementia
  • Explain some ways that an optometrist can modify the consultation to be even more attentive to the needs of an elderly patient
  • Discuss the additional steps that an optometrist should take to ensure that an elderly patient complies with advice for taking medications
  • List the ocular medications that are may cause important side effects or compound existing problems in elderly patients
  • List some commonly prescribed medications for elderly patients and their ocular side effects.
  • Identify pre-operative patient findings that can impact on surgical outcomes
  • Identify appropriate pre- and post-operative testing for patients
  • Identify post-operative patient findings that require altered management.
  • Recognise the signs of potentially life-threatening ocular conditions that may present to their practices
  • Have a better understanding of referral pathways with regards to neuro-ophthalmology
  • Have an approach to a patient with unexplained visual loss that would help protect against future litigation.
  • Describe the contemporary model of the tear film structure
  • Review and relate sex- and gender- differences in ocular tissues including tear film and ocular health to clinical findings
  • Integrate sex-difference considerations into an effective management of dry eye and contact lens discomfort.
  • Describe eyelid anatomy and demonstrate an understanding of basic principles of eyelid reconstruction.
  • Evaluate individual defects and anticipate potential complications of surgical management
  • Design effective strategies to manage and treat common complications following eyelid reconstruction.
  • List the evidence for and against the use of orthokeratology for the long term management of myopia.
  • To provide up to date data regarding current and forecast trends in diabetes, Australia and abroad
  • To provide an overview of current and emerging implications for Australian eye care, including emerging directions in diagnosis and care
  • Identify measures that are most likely to facilitate or enable good glaucoma and diabetic eye care delivery.
  • Explain the evolution of OCT as an ophthalmic diagnostic technique.
  • Discuss the importance of OCT in the assessment of ocular disease.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical principles of OCT.
  • Interpret an OCT image of a normal eye.
  • List the features in a variety of OCT machines.
  • Perform OCT scans to identify the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL), the macular area and the ganglion cell layer (GCL).
  • Identify the different patterns of loss in glaucoma that are evident with OCT.
  • Compare and contrast visual field and OCT changes.
  • Explain the integration of the RNFL and GCL scans in the evaluation of the risk of glaucoma.
  • Recognise signs of brain tumours or other cranial pathology using the RNFL and GCL scans.
