Learning Objectives

  • Understand the optical design, pros and cons of recently released EDOF IOL options and gain a better understanding of how best to refract these patients post-operatively.
  • Understand which patients will require toric IOL treatment of their astigmatism and gain knowledge about the effect of the posterior cornea based on research recently published from the two speakers.
  • Confidently assess post-operative laser vision correction findings and manage basic concerns as well as understand when to refer for further assessment.
  • Assess an eye which fails to refract up as expected due to irregular corneal astigmatism and advise the patient about potential surgical and laser management options best suited to their examination findings and expectations.
  • Understand the differences, pros and cons of various multifocal IOL designs that patients may now be offered and be able to discuss these options with patients as well as assess whether their post-op concerns are to be expected or need further intervention.
  • Consider whether a patient with an unexpected or suboptimal refractive outcome after cataract surgery would or could benefit from further surgical or laser enhancement and be able to discuss with that patient the expected time course, procedures required and likely outcomes.
