Session 1 (6:00-7:15pm): "Better Early than Late" - When early cataract surgery is in the patient's best interest - Dr Nirosha Paramanathan

Session 2 (7:15-7:45pm): "The Role of SLT in Glaucoma" - Dr Shyalle Kahawita

Session 3 (7:55-9:10pm): "More than Meets the Eye" - Dr Katie Chen

Learning Objectives

  • specifically look for Fuchs’ endothelial disease in every patient with cataract
  • specifically look for signs of Pseudo-exfoliation in every patient with cataract
  • specifically look at anterior chamber depth in all patients, particularly those with cataract
  • NOT consider poor central visual potential as a contra-indication for cataract surgery
  • understand that better vision slows down progression/improves general well-being in dementia patients
  • refer already deemed ‘too difficult/risky to be done’ cases to the right surgeon
  • disregard best corrected vision in hyperopes with cataract
  • Understand what SLT is
  • Recognise that SLT is an appropriate 1st line treatment for POAG/OHT
  • Recognise that patients who have had SLT still need monitoring for progression of glaucoma
  • define imposter syndrome, and recognise how this impacts on their ability to provide a high standard of patient care
  • identify strategies that can be employed to overcome imposter syndrome
  • understand when unconscious bias occurs and why it is important to recognise
  • be self aware and identify their own hidden biases
  • have some effective strategies to mitigate unconscious bias in clinical decision making processes
