Learning Objectives
- Discuss the increasing epidemiology and burden of myopia across the globe
- Create a myopia risk profile for patients utilising etiology, progression, onset and prevalence data from the literature and results from a comprehensive clinical exam for progressive myopia
- Communicate the risks of myopia, prediction of progression for individual cases and the need to slow progression with children and parents
- Understand various risk factors on myopia development: e.g. environmental, peripheral defocus and accommodative lag
- Communicate with patients and /or guardians about the risks of myopia, prediction of progression for individual cases and the need to slow progression
- Create a myopia progression risk profile for patients utilising aetiology, progression, onset and prevalence data from the literature as well as results from a comprehensive clinical examination for progressive myopia
- Explain and discuss with children and parents likely myopia control outcomes of different management strategies, including the pros and cons of behavioural and optical options
- Create, justify and implement an appropriate myopia management plan using behaviour and spectacles to slow the rate of myopia progression for each patient
- Create, justify and implement an appropriate myopia management plan using contact multifocal and ortho-k lenses to slow the rate of myopia progression for each patient
- Explain and discuss with children and parents likely myopia control outcomes and the pros and cons of different contact lens management strategies while understanding the current limitations and future research required to improve efficacy of these myopia control strategies
- Create, justify and implement an appropriate myopia management plan using a low-dose atropine to slow the rate of myopia progression for each patient
- Explain and discuss with children and parents likely myopia control outcomes and the pros and cons of different management strategies while understanding the current limitations and future research required to improve efficacy of these myopia control strategies
