Learning Objectives

  • Characterise the link between BV disorders and patient symptoms
  • Describe a simplified approach to assessing vergence and accommodation function
  • Review the clinical picture of a normal binocular vision system
  • Describe and be able to demonstrate various techniques to assess horizontal heterophoria and fusional reserves at distance and near
  • Discuss the clinical picture of normal vergence function and be able to diagnose disorders
  • Describe and be able to demonstrate various techniques to assess accommodative lag and facility at near
  • Discuss the clinical picture of normal accommodation function and be able to diagnose disorders
  • Describe the mechanical basis of interaction between accommodation and vergence systems
  • Explain and be able to measure AC/A ratio at near using various techniques
  • Describe and be able to demonstrate free space distance and near retinoscopy, by use of lens flippers or a trial frame
  • Establish management pathways for BV disorders involving a variety of techniques including adds, prism prescribing and vision training
  • Discuss complex cases of vergence and accommodation interaction
  • Demonstrate ability to diagnose and manage simultaneous disorders of both vergence and accommodation
  • Demonstrate how to explain complex BV concepts and management plans in lay terminology
  • Explain the key BV conditions which are relevant to myopia control and management
  • Demonstrate the key clinical measures required to formulate a comprehensive myopia management plan factoring in BV
  • Discuss the clinical implications of fitting young myopes with contact lenses based on their BV presentation, in terms of myopia control efficacy and visual comfort
  • Identify specific management pathways for childhood myopia including classification of BV as a primary or secondary prescribing decision
