Activity Outline
The recent development and uptake of extended depth of focus intraocular lenses (EDOF IOLs) have improved the refractive options available to both patients and clinicians. Drs Robert McDonald and Alex Hamilton describe the evolution of this technology and the patients most likely to benefit from it.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the key differences between monofocal, multifocal, and EDOF intraocular lenses
- Identify appropriate patient selection criteria for EDOF lenses based on lifestyle and ocular health
- Discuss the role of optometrists in preoperative counselling and patient education for IOL selection
- Evaluate the advantages and limitations of EDOF lenses compared to multifocal and monofocal option
- Understand different EDOF optical designs including diffractive, spherical aberration based, pinhole effect, and non-diffractive wavefront shifting technology
- Assess the impact of EDOF lenses on spectacle dependence for various daily activities
