Activity Outline

Chairside Testing

(18.05.25) Day 1 - Fitzroy North Eyecare, 798 Nicholson Street, Fitzroy North (19.05.25) Day 2/3 - Vibe Hotel Docklands, Marina Tower, 443 Docklands Drive, Docklands

Increasing your knowledge, skills and confidence in the examination and assessment processes of complex patients and bringing a behavioural perspective to the standard testing you provide.

This unit of the AAVC program aims to prepare you with the assessment and diagnostic skills to gather the necessary background data to make a clear diagnosis and treatment plan for children and adults who have congenital, developmental or acquired vision disorders. The course will cover history/interview methods from both a developmental and behavioural perspective; discuss the inter-relatedness of tests probes and the importance of arranging testing sequence and instructional sets. Discussion will cover the benefits of both free-space testing and in-instrument testing and a combination of the two. A scientific basis for appreciating the value of a comprehensive assessment and the impact of accommodative dysfunction on the total action system of the body is provided. We explore the diagnostic value of testing eye movements in free space or using standardised tests to confidently explain performance to parents when a child struggles.

Additional screening tests will be covered to explore other factors comprising visual perceptual skills and reflexes, including the expected performance, to understand how reduced performance influences every day challenges or adaptations.

The workshop will demonstrate many of the tests, with hands on exploration being an important part. Case examples are planned with findings, treatments and outcomes followed by practical exploration of Yoked Prism. After this, we will have group exploration and discussion of record keeping, case presentation and report writing.

Learning Objectives

  • Be familiar with the basic testing equipment and targets for both distance and near point testing, including plans for purchase with discussion about what is available in their practices
  • Be familiar with the use of standardised and non-standardised (diagnostic) testing of eye movements
  • Recognise the relationship of accommodative and convergence testing dependent on instructional set, with demonstrations, discussion and advantages of each test
  • Be confident using the Analytical, Diagnosis including Case Typing and Lens application
  • Have practical experience using the Standard Analytical Examination and Analytical Awareness
  • Be familiar with and understanding of the use of the Van Orden Star and Cheiroscope
  • Understand test results with insights in CI and Convergence Excess
  • Be familiar with the use of Micro-Prism probes as well as plus acceptance probes
  • Be able to discuss eye movement dysfunction, treatment and outcomes for both visual skills cases that are oculomotor and/or vergence related
  • Have familiarity through practice of eye movement testing
  • Be confident to screen both perceptual skills and early reflexes for learning related or visual skills cases
  • Have hands-on experience with both perceptual and reflex testing
  • Be able to prescribe from a behavioural perspective in refractive cases through group discussion of case examples, treatment options and prognosis
  • Be familiar with the use of yoked prisms as a compensatory and therapeutic tool
  • Discuss and explore different directions of the prisms, what power and the use of obliques and unequal powers
  • Build suitable records for behavioural testing that collected including diagnosis auto-coding and forms for different tests including yoked prism, performance testing
  • Present cases to parents and patients, including what to demonstrate, with discussion by the group about advantages of longer vs. shorter reports and case presentations
  • Diagnose and prepare reports including a treatment plan, see different treatment options and increase confidence in diagnosis and treatment prognosis
