Learning Objectives
- Have insight into the pathway patients with cataract will follow, from the point of the optometrist referral to the surgeon’s table and back to the referring optometrist
- Appreciate the information desired by ophthalmologists in a cataract referral
- Be able to instruct patients on appropriate steps to take prior to attending a cataract assessment (eg treating dry eye disease, removing contact lenses prior to biometry measurements)
- Understand clinical decision making used to identify which lens is most suitable for which patient, based on patients’ ocular histories
- be able to discuss lens suitability with patients
- Learn how to appropriately triage patients with multiple pathologies, including cataracts and other potential co-morbidities
- Be better equipped to manage patient expectations both prior to and after cataract surgery
- Have improved ability and understanding of subjective refraction techniques for different IOL types
- Be able to inform patients of likely surgical procedures they may need, discuss follow up requirements and post operative care instructions
- Be able to identify red flags when assessing patients pre & post operatively
- Have a better understanding of current cataract surgery techniques, for both simple and complicated surgery
- Understand the history and development of cataract surgery and intraocular lenses
- Have further insight into emerging technology in the realm of cataract surgery
- Identify lenses in broad categories (eg. monofocal, toric, multifocal) based on their appearance during biomicroscopy
- Have an understanding of the limitations of current IOLs
- Have an understanding of the parameters affecting IOL selections
- Be aware of the conditions that may limit effectiveness of IOLs designed to ameliorate presbyopic symptoms
- Be exposed to a number of different cataract clinical scenarios
- Have a better understanding of the nuances of pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative decision making process
- Understand the complex nature of choosing the most appropriate IOL for each patient
- Be able to confidently assist in the pre- and post-operative co-management of patient undergoing cataract surgery.
