Crossing The Line: Maintaining Your Professional and Personal Boundaries

Provider: Mivision

Contact: Nikki Byrne, [E] nikki@mivision.com.au, [P] 02 8336 8616

Activity Outline

Good medical practice relies on trust between doctors and patients and their families. Practitioners who cross professional and personal boundaries can undermine that trust and cause profound psychological harm to patients. They may also compromise ongoing medical care. Practitioners who are reported for boundary violation – whether rightly or wrongly – are at risk of deregistration or having restrictions placed on their licence. How can you reduce your risks of crossing the line?

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the difference between boundary crossings and boundary violations,
  • Understand the risk factors for practitioners and patients that may make a boundary violation more likely to occur, and
  • Understand ways to mitigate risks of boundary violations and apply these to day-to-day practice.
