Learning Objectives

  • To appreciate the specific subtypes of drusen that increase the risk of AMD and to know how to look for these clinically
  • To understand the AREDS study and how it relates to clinical practice and in giving advice to patients
  • To appreciate the use of OCT as a modality to differentiate drusen subtypes
  • To understand the EAGLE study and its findings and correlate this to clinical practice
  • To appreciate the role of laser peripheral iridotomy (PI) in preventing angle closure: understanding the evidence.
  • To become familiar with other treatment procedures including iridoplasty.
  • To develop a clear differential diagnosis list for a chronic lid lesion based on clinical and demographic characteristics alone
  • To appreciate simple chronic lid margin disease and its role in contributing to malignancy
  • To understand the etiological principles involved in entropian and ectropian formation
