Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the importance of Meibomian gland dysfunction in the context of Sjögren disease
  • List the various approaches to the treatment of dry eye disease (DED)
  • Evaluate the use of thermal pulsation to treat DED
  • Discuss the role of intense pulse light (IPL) therapy for the treatment of DED
  • • Describe and classify the various forms of ocular surface disease (OSD) with particular emphasis on the TFOS Dews II
  • Explain the range of conditions that are categorised as OSD
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the epidemiology of OSD
  • List the signs and symptoms of patients with OSD
  • Discuss the diagnosis and management of OSD.
  • Explain the benefits that photobiostimulation in the treatment of dry eye disease (DED)
  • Discuss the indications for intense pulse light (IPL) treatment instead of topical therapy for DED
  • Explain which patients would benefit from the administration of combined IPL, optimised power energy (OPE) and low light level therapy (LLLT) in the management of DED
  • Describe the use of bead therapy and instant dry eye therapies to manage DED
  • Evaluate the value of ‘steam treatment goggles’ to address Meibomian gland dysfunction.
  • Demonstrate an ability the in-office treatment of blepharitis
  • Explain the value of keratography in assessing dry eye.
