Activity Outline
You are invited to join the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne to hear about "Watching Ocular Immune Cells in Action", as part of the 2025 Seeing Beyond lecture series. This in-person event will feature Dr Phil Bedggood and Professor Laura Downie, who will present advancements in in vivo imaging of immune cells in the human eye, highlighting new developments in techniques and how they can impact disease and the development of new treatments in the cornea and the retina.
This event will also mark the launch of the Diabetes Eye Screening Investigation Clinic (DESIC), based at the Melbourne Eyecare Clinic with the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences.
Learning Objectives
- Understand recent evidence relating to the immune cell landscape of the human cornea
- Appreciate the utility of functional in vivo confocal microscopy (Fun-IVCM) imaging for defining biomarkers of ocular and systemic disease
- Understand how Fun-IVCM be used to monitor the efficacy of therapies that modulate the immune system
- Appreciate the major optical limitations that must be overcome in order to resolve small objects in the living retina
- Understand how the application of Prentice's rule facilitates mapping the refractive power of a transparent object, whether it be a spectacle lens or a cell
- Learn where retinal immune cells may be most readily visualised, and over what time course they should be tracked
