Learning Objectives

  • At the completion of this course optometrists will be able to asses suitability of patients in their optometric practice. The ability to decide on the most suitable option for patient by carefully assessing their patients.
  • At the completion of this course optometrists will be able to identify contra-indictations for refractive/laser eye surgery. What prohibits a successful outcome and what conditions can/can't be managed pre-surgery. This includes the management of dry eye patients, patient's with auto-immune conditions for example Sjorren's Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis. The therapeutic management of such conditions will also be discussed through a series of case studies as well as pre-operative drop regime.
  • Optometrists will be able to identify the signs, symptoms and presentations of various conditions, such as herpes simplex and herpes zoster.
  • At the completion of this presentations, through case studies optometrists will gain an understanding of how to initiate treatment, what therapeutic drops work best, and when to refer.
  • Optometrists will have a good understanding of various anterior segment complications post- cataract surgery. They will be able to identify the presenting signs and symptoms when a patient attends their practice post-operative.
  • At the completions of this presentations optometrists will be able to discern which of this post-operative complications need to be referred back to the ophthalmologist and which can be managed in their practice and how to manage.
  • At the completion of this course optometrists will have a good understanding of the appearance of drusen on OCT, and fundus examinations of patients. Optometrists will be able to deferentially diagnose and asses these patients.
  • Through a series of case studies and discussions optometrists will have a good understanding of when to refer certain patients presenting with various retinal pathologies when asses the back of the eye. When is drusen, drusen?
