Learning Objectives

• Differentiate and characterise different surgical approaches to cataract surgery
• Recognise risk factors and red flags when referring for cataract surgery
• Understand the implications of pre-existing conditions and possible complications • Understand the incidence, risk factors and treatment options of PCO following cataract surgery
• Understand the different types of anaesthesia used for cataract surgery and what the patient can expect
• Differentiate between posterior capsule rupture and zonulodialysis as complications of cataract surgery
• Understand the patient journey in post-operative recovery from cataract surgery, along with appropriate outcome expectations (1 day, 2 weeks, 1 month)
• Understand ocular medication schedules following cataract surgery and the importance of compliance and keeping follow-up appointments
• Understand when the patient is ready to resume swimming, exercising, flying and travelling
• Understand when the patient is ready to update their glasses
• Understand risk factors associated with lens dislocation
• Understand when to refer back when coming across post-operative complications
• Understand the incidence, risk factors and treatment options of PCO following cataract surgery
• Understand the process in selecting the optimal IOL for patients (eg monofocal/EDOF/Multifocal IOL) and key considerations pre-op and post-op management
• Be provided with an overview of current IOL categories & technologies (including optics and clinical outcomes from published studies of Vivity and Panoptix intraocular lenses)
